The New Studia Hermetica begins here...

Pues bien, he aquí que otro proyecto comienza.

Sapere aude!

ENGLISH INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW STUDIA HERMETICA

Well, back again to this New Studia Hermetica, I’m going to proceed to make a brief explanation about its main features and philosophical mainstream and backgrounds. Firstly, please I beg you to take account that this is not a “second” (or a translation) of our old SH plainly written in English (I deem this sort of undertaking an absurd and a waste of time); on the contrary, this is a new project obviously based in the same label developed during the last three years in Azogue Journal, but delivered attending to a different motto and constructed thinking in a wider public, or in other words, a new virtual platform devoted to learned (and not specialist) people who can read in English and possibly in Frech, beyond researchers and specialists in our range of study. For that reason, the members of this New Studia Hermetica will deal with the matters that they consider appropriate for the correct understanding of the History of Thought, with special reference on the fields normally attached to our inquiries, which many people in Academy linked to the currents treated in the young discipline called Western Esotericism. But this NSH is more than a new Academic platform on Esotericism, Hermetism and related fields. We will deal with Art, History (in a broader sense), Science, and surely we're going to include our comments and opinions. It’s simply a Humanistic project, not attached to a concrete perspective and methodology, outside or inside the Academy.

In short, since the very beginning, in my mind lies the idea of conceive a fresher and more dynamic platform of share our ideas, considering we’re not just historians, philologists or scientists, but humanists and thoughtful people too, which it mean that we’re eager to spread the love of knowing and go deeper into reality, and finally share our possibly discoveries with others, in order to make this world more habitable and sublime. In fact, I deeply feel that this is the fundamental aim of most Ancient sources, which means that for many Ancient and Renaissance men there wasn’t a real division in the inner heart of wisdom, and consequently we affirm that we are happily agree with those old and venerable authors and opuses. Adopting a sloganic way of talk: We do love Science, as well as Arts and Humanistic disciplines, and we do not give support to the usual isolation between them.

NEW STUDIA HERMETICA'S FEATURES

Blog format: we’ll try to write and construct concise and brief posts and contributions. Try to consider that our words are simply comments, news, opinions, reviews and overall brief explanations (it’s not in our minds to boring nobody), about whatever we think interesting or useful for the rest, always according to the background which inspires the project.

Academic purposes: Studia Hermetica is exclusively an academic project, which it means that is based strictly on the principles normally attached to this perspective: textual criticism, research’s ethics, falsifiability, formality, neutrality… The people who participate in Studia Hermetica are recognized researchers or students (linked or not to an official institution), and not a practitioners or minions devoted to a concrete vision of life, religion, ideology, etc. Our work is published in periodical, scientific and recognized publications on the field.

Artistic inspiration: We adore Art and beauty. As a historian on Hermetism and Platonism, we're specially linked to the Platonic concept of eros.

Humanistic aim: Studia Hermetica is a project designed and conceived by humanists, and consequently it’s directed toward humanists around the world, looking forward their contributions and suggestions to make the mankind grow. Our humanistic aims are based in the same tenets affirmed by the Renaissance philosophers during 15th and 16th centuries, which it means that we hardly encourage the study of classical and ancient languages, next to the joint of opuses inherited from Ancient period and Hellenistic Culture. Therefore, our range of interests involves the entire History of Thought, (Philosophy, Science and Religion), as well as its modern manifestations.

NEW STUDIA HERMETICA'S CATEGORIES

ARETE: this section is conceived to be a sort of biographical corner of the website, in which we’ll try to extol the personalities and characters of Art, Science and Humanistic fields. I’ve always considered that the human and biographic examples and exploits, sometimes are better allies in the pursuit of soul’s perfection, sometimes more than words, books and clever speeches.

ARTS: this is the Artistic corner of the website, in which we will try to deliver our artistic obsessions. In my case, I’ve created weeks ago my “Kircher’s Cabinet”, an attempt to show and share my aesthetical considerations and, why not, to explain the relationships between Platonic, Hermetic and Occult philosophies in base of their imagery. However, this is a personal blog, and not any kind of academic work.

DOXA: In this section we’ll include our comments, considerations and opinions inspired by our daily life or merely based in our readings, feelings and thoughts. It’s a sort of website's miscellany area.

HERMETICA and PLATONISM, constitute the philosophical or savant side of the website. These both categories deal with the philosophies usually attached to our range of study: Middle Platonism, Neo Platonism, Stoicism, Christian Mysticism, Kabbalah, Sufism, Theurgy, Theosophy, Occultism, etc.

PRAXIS HERMETICA deals with the so called “technical” side of Hermetism and related currents, you know, Alchemy, Magic, Astrology, Theurgical rites, Gnostic hymns, etc.

SCIENCE is our section devoted to the current and past scientific contributions. In our opinion, the study of the cosmos is one of the most striking enterprises.

WEBLOGS is, as its proper title indicates, a section in which NSH's members will deliver their daily life as a researchers. In the beginning, we count on some projects in this sense: PhD. Mar Rey Bueno's weblogs and my own De Umbris Idearum's blog.

NEW STUDIA HERMETICA'S MEMBERS

Currently, we count on four members: Mar Rey Bueno, Miguel López Pérez, Francisco de Mendonça Jr. and Iván Elvira.

How do I become a member of this NSH? The minimum requirements of NSH membership are the usual for any sort of Academic undertaking: a bachelor in any scientific, artistic or humanistic field of your own country, or merely an accreditation of being a valuable researcher in our fields of study; in despite of these requirements, we allow the participation of university students and "practitioners", but always considering each particular case. I encourage you to join us, and share with the world your inquiries and thoughts. Anyway, Studia Hermetica is opened to centralize other project aimed by similar tenets, so if you are interesting in to unite your own projects with ours, go ahead.

For further questions or queries, please contact with Iván Elvira, the NSH's Director and Webmaster.
I encourage you to participate!

Warm regards and be welcome to this new stage!

Iván Elvira.
